ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme) was introduced in 2015 as a significant money saving opportunity for large UK businesses. UK Government predicts that ESOS could help deliver savings of £1.6bn to companies through reduced energy bills and better energy management practices. What is ESOS? ESOS is originally a piece of EU legislation , adopted and enhanced in the UK which requires member states to introduce a mandatory programme of energy audits for 'large enterprises'. This means over 11000 of Britain's biggest companies have been required to comply - with the initial audits undertaken by 5th December 2015. The 4 year cycle of ESOS means that Phase 2 ESOS Reports were required in December 2019 and Phase 3 by December 2023. As a minimum, large organisations (those with more than 250 employees or a turnover and balance sheet in excess of £44M) will be required, every 4 years, to review total energy use from their business operations, including building energy use, transport energy use and industrial processes. These businesses are required to show that they have calculated the total amount of energy used, and identified potential measures that could save energy. They are not required to undertake any of the improvements proposed. ESOS may be viewed as yet another level of time-intensive and costly environmental compliance on top of the existing SECR Repprting, Carbon Reduction Commitment, Mandatory Carbon Reporting and Climate Change Levy. Much of the requirement for ESOS assessment is done by conducting energy surveys of a representative sample of the buildings to occupy. Using a standard, easilty understood approach minimises cost. It is only through using such techniques that the baseline of existing energy use can be established and through their future use that the benefits of changes implemented can be quantified.
